Claude Lucien Thomas and Stivers Jazz Orchestra Premiere at Lincoln Center

The Jazz Orchestra at Stivers School for the Arts has been invited to perform at Lincoln Center during the New York City Jazz Festival in March. The event spotlights outstanding college and university jazz ensembles, plus four high school groups from across the country.

“For jazz, there is no bigger venue,” said director Claude Thomas. “It’s really a dream come true.”

National Champions Stivers Jazz Orchestra takes 1st in Boston!

The Stivers Jazz Orchestra captured first place in its division Saturday, March 5, in the 43rd annual Berklee College of Music High School Jazz Festival in Boston.

Claude Lucien Thomas and Stivers Jazz Orchestra has five CD recordings to date and is currently completing work on its newest CD “From Boston to new York”.
The Stivers School for the Arts Jazz Orchestra has won first place or grand prize awards at every jazz festival entered culminating in winning the prestigious Berklee College of Music Jazz Festival in 2004, 2008 and 2011. The group has recently performed as part of the Muse Machine production of “The Music of Disney”. and appears in the Cityfolk premier “Celebrating Billy Strayhorn” with the Terrell Staford Quintet.
The newest recording “Fromm Boston to new York” highlights the group performance live at Lincoln Center. The Stivers Jazz Orchestra has appeared with: Maynard Ferguson, Dianne Shuur, Roberta Piket, David Benoit, Terrell Stafford, Dick Oatts, Steve Wilson, Mulgrew Miller, Ray Vega, John and Jeff Clayton, Paul Ferguson, Shawn Wallace, Oliver Nelson and many times with Derrick Gardner.

The Stivers School for the Arts Jazz Orchestra is going to New York to perform at Lincoln Center as distinguished student artists with the New York City Jazz Festival.  The festival features the best of college jazz performers plus four selected high school ensembles, and as winners of the 2010 Berklee College of Music National High School Jazz Festival, Stivers was not required to audition for the spot on the New York City Jazz Festival lineup. Festival managers heard the Dayton group in Boston and extended the invitation.

Putting The Polish On: Stivers Jazz Orchestra Takes On The Legacy Of Billy Strayhorn

On the culminating night of Cityfolk’s upcoming weeklong celebration of Billy Strayhorn (April 18), two bands will be delivering his music. Terell Stafford, who has worked extensively at the arts magnet, will lead his quintet and the Stivers School for the Arts Jazz Orchestra will offer a big band perspective on the Dayton-born composer’s rich musical palette.
